How it works
Formula: Chance of a total = combinations giving it ÷ (sides)ⁿ
Each die is drawn with the browser's secure random generator, discarding values that would tip the balance, so every face has the same chance. With several dice, totals are not equally likely: there are 6 ways to make 7 with 2 dice (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1) but only one way to make 2. The table gives these chances, worked out exactly.
Worked examples
Rolling 7 with 2 dice
6 combinations out of 36: 16.7%. It is the most common total.
Rolling double six
1 combination out of 36: 2.8%.
At least one 6 in 4 rolls
51.8%: a little better than one in two.
Common mistakes
Thinking every total of 2 dice is equally likely.
7 comes up 6 times more often than 2 or 12.
Adding: 4 rolls × 1/6 = 4 chances in 6 of a 6.
Use the opposite: 1 − (5/6)⁴ = 51.8%.
Thinking a 6 is “due” after a long run without one.
The die has no memory: 16.7% on every roll.
What the calculation leaves out
- The draw happens on your device and is not recorded: it does not replace an official draw in front of witnesses.
