Rounding calculator
To round to 2 decimal places, look at the third decimal: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down. So 3.14159 becomes 3.14 and 2.675 becomes 2.68.

How it works
Choose the place to round to, then look at the next digit. In standard rounding (round half up), a next digit of 5 or more increases the kept digit by one; otherwise the kept digits stay the same. Halfway values are rounded away from zero: 2.5 → 3 and −2.5 → −3. 'Round up' always goes to the next value above (ceiling), 'round down' to the next value below (floor), whatever the next digit. The calculator works on the number as you typed it, so 1.005 rounds to 1.01.
Worked examples
2.675 to the hundredth
The next digit is a 5: round up, 2.68.
1,234 to the hundred
1,200.
7.2 to a whole number, up or down
Up: 8. Down: 7.
Common mistakes
Rounding twice: 2.449 → 2.45 → 2.5.
Round once, from the original number: 2.4.
Rounding −2.5 to −2.
To the nearest, halves go away from zero: -2.5 gives -3.
Trusting a calculator for 2.675.
Some calculators show 2.67 because of binary; here, 2.68, as written.

Frequently asked questions
How do I round to the nearest whole number?
Look at the first decimal. 0 to 4: keep the whole number (7.4 → 7). 5 to 9: add one (7.5 → 8).
How do I round to the nearest hundred?
Look at the tens digit. 1,249 rounds to 1,200 because the tens digit is 4; 1,250 rounds to 1,300.
What is the difference between round up and round to nearest?
Round to nearest picks the closest value (4.2 → 4). Round up always goes to the next value above (4.2 → 5), which is useful for things like the number of boxes or buses needed.
Why do some calculators round 1.005 to 1.00?
Because computers store 1.005 as 1.00499999… in binary. This calculator rounds the decimal number you typed, so 1.005 correctly becomes 1.01.
