How it works
Formula: Average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ weights
Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. With equal weights this is the ordinary average. Grades can be on any scale; enter the maximum ('out of') to see the result as a percentage. The calculator doesn't apply any school's specific rules (rounding, minimum grades, letter conversion).
Worked example
| Subject | Grade | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Math | 85 | 2 |
| English | 72 | 3 |
| History | 90 | 1 |
| Science | 64 | 2 |
| Weighted average | 75.5 | 8 |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted average?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. 85 (×2), 72 (×3), 90 (×1): (170 + 216 + 90) ÷ 6 ≈ 79.3.
What is the difference with a simple average?
A simple average gives every grade the same weight. A weighted average counts some grades more, for example a final exam or a course with more credits.
Can I convert my average into a GPA?
Each school uses its own conversion table between percentages, letters and GPA, so this calculator doesn't convert to GPA. Use your school's table.
