How it works
Formula: Grams = volume (mL) × ingredient weight per mL
Each ingredient has its own weight per volume. The calculator uses the weights published by the US Department of Agriculture (FoodData Central, SR Legacy): for example 125 g per US cup of all-purpose flour. Other volumes are derived from it: a US cup is 236.6 mL, a metric cup 250 mL, a tablespoon 15 mL and a teaspoon 5 mL. Water is counted at 1 g per mL. These are averages: a cup of flour scooped straight from the bag can weigh noticeably more than a spooned and leveled one, so a kitchen scale stays the most reliable tool.
