Test yourself: every answer is computed by the tool, and the wrong choices are the most common traps.
How it works
Formula: Share = bill × (1 + tip/100) ÷ people
The tip is a percentage of the bill: 15% of 80 = 12. The total (92) is then divided by the number of people. When it does not divide evenly, each share is rounded up to the cent so the group always covers the total; the tool then shows what the group pays in all. Tipping customs vary a lot between countries: the tool does not set any.
Worked examples
Bill of 80, 15% tip, 4 people
Tip 12.00, total 92.00: 23.00 each.
Bill of 47.50, 10%, 3 people
Total 52.25: 17.42 each, 52.26 paid in all.
The same bill, rounding up to a whole unit
18.00 each: the group pays 54.00.
Common mistakes
Working out 15% by dividing by 15: 80 ÷ 15 = 5.33.
15% means × 0.15: on 80, 12.00.
Rounding each share down: 3 × 17.41 = 52.23.
That leaves the bill short: the tool rounds up, 17.42 each.
Counting people who are not paying (kids, guests).
Enter only the people who pay: each share changes.
What the calculation leaves out
- Customs vary by country: in some, service is already included in prices. The tool does not set any percentage.
- The bill is split evenly: to pay for your own dishes, add them up separately.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the bill by 0.15: on 80 that is 12. For 10%, move the decimal point: 8.
Why does the group sometimes pay a little more than the total?
Because each share is rounded up to the cent: 52.25 split 3 ways is 17.42 each, or 52.26.
Is the tip worked out before or after tax?
